Back-to-School Means Eating Healthy With Walmart

Back-to-school has a different meaning among homeschoolers, but when it comes to feeding our kids, the differences are slim.  Parents of homeschoolers or public school kids want to send their children off to school feeling nourished and ready to tackle the school day.  For our family, we need quick ideas that are also packed with nutrition so that we can begin our schooling early and I won’t have to worry that they’re getting the essential vitamins and nutrients their growing bodies and minds need during this critical stage of development.

At my local Walmart, I was able to find ingredients that accomplishes our family goals for quick, nutritious, and healthy foods and snacks to power through our homeschooling day.  Mornings are especially important to us so we heavily emphasize on ensuring that our morning meals are filled with protein and fruits and/or veggies to help them start each morning on the right foot and a head start in getting their daily recommended intake of foods.

I bought several bags of frozen fruit, bananas, plain yogurt, almond milk, milk, peanut butter, honey, oatmeal, applesauce, and dried cranberries.  Three fast and healthy breakfast options for us include smoothies (made with frozen fruit, plain yogurt, almond milk, and flax oil), bananas cocoa peanut butter milkshakes, and baked blueberry walnut oatmeal.

From our Back-To-School Walmart stash, I made smoothies with their frozen fruit blend that includes peaches, mangos, strawberries, and pineapple.   I always include plain yogurt, flax oil or ground flax meal, and almond milk or coconut milk for protein and Omega 3’s which helps to curb hunger and provide essential nutrients for their brains.  Sometimes I’ll even add fresh greens like spinach to our smoothies to bulk up the nutrition and help them to get their recommended intake of veggies in.

One of my family’s favorite quick breakfast option is Cocoa Peanut Butter Milkshake.  I know what you’re thinking… A milkshake for breakfast?!  Yes!!!  This version isn’t made with ice cream, but frozen bananas for the milkshake texture.  It has plenty of protein from nut butters and either almond milk or coconut milk or regular milk.  I also add either ground flax seed or flax oil for more added nutrition.  On occasion, we also enjoy it as a snack and as a healthier alternative to milkshakes.  I hope you enjoy the recipe I’ve included in this post!

Another breakfast our family loves is my baked oatmeal.  For this post, you can see a typical oatmeal bake that I make often.  In the picture above is one of my kids’ favorite baked oatmeal:  Blueberry Walnut Oatmeal Bake.  It contains eggs and either almond milk or regular milk for added protein so they’re not as hungry afterwards as they would be with just a plain old bowl of sugary oatmeal.  You can view my Blueberry Walnut Oatmeal Bake Recipe here.

As you can see, it’s crucial to ensure your children are eating healthy for back-to-school starting with the most important meal in the day:  breakfast!  This is what will help fuel the through their morning and be more prepared to endure the long school day.  I hope you have enjoyed the back-to-school healthy eating tips and thanks to Walmart, my readers have a chance to win a $25 Walmart Gift Card to help with your healthy back-to-school food shopping.  Enter to win below!
